11-29-2018: Response to Media, Regarding Transition and Personnel Changes

Committee to Elect Danny Rogers for Sheriff | PO Box 7012 | Greensboro, NC 27417

For Immediate Release

The number of "full time permanent employees that were terminated was 14. For Barnes to indicate this is a "frightening development" is a response clearly uttered to strike fear in residents. What is truly 'frightening" is he feels that less than 1% of his department are the only people within his organization that know anything or can step up and fill other's shoes.

The remainder were only part-time personnel most of whom retired and was only working a few hours per week at their convenience. Some of those part time workers would come and go at their leisure and were not really needed. This was a waste of taxpayer's money. Barnes' "retiree callback" or part-time workers budget has increased nearly a million dollars in the last 6 years. During this transition, my staff and I have come across several instances where B.J. Barnes has allowed money to be spent recklessly and unnecessarily. This is just a "prima facia" look at things. I'm certain there will be many other instances that would be a cause for concern.

The Guilford County Sheriff's office has many great men and women doing their best job to protect the citizens of Guilford County. In most cases, Barnes, seemed to be missing in action. It appears he provided little to no leadership to the fine men and women serving in his administration. So, to sum it up; it wasn't the work of B. J. Barnes that put the officers in the best light, it was the great work of the officers that hid the ineptitude of their leader.

Our administration, in concert with the 600 plus men and women who remain, will be fine. A positive change with rational, ethical leadership is on the way.

Moving forward, I am too busy to keep responding to B. J. Barnes childish rants. I am excited to get to work for the citizens of Guilford County. The voters have spoken. Therefore, unless there is a legitimate concern, I will not be addressing any more questions raised because of B. J. Barnes.

11-21-2018: Situation during Transition

Committee to Elect Danny Rogers for Sheriff | PO Box 7012 | Greensboro, NC 27417

For Immediate Release

I have just been made aware that BJ Barnes is trying to divide the agency before my arrival. He just sent a very disturbing email, department wide and to select County Officials. I am saddened at the fact that B J Barnes continues to spew his divisive rhetoric. I had hoped this would be a smooth, cordial transition but he obviously has other ideas. I have and will continue to take the high road during this transition phase. My message to the Men and Women of the department is the same as I gave to the voters. I intend on bringing a positive change to all the members of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office. All areas of the agency will be analyzed for efficiency, effectiveness, and value to the taxpayers. I look forward to serving with you as we serve the great citizens of Guilford County.

11-20-2018: Regarding Old County Jail and Transition Process

Committee to Elect Danny Rogers for Sheriff | PO Box 7012 | Greensboro, NC 27417

For Immediate Release

Old County Jail

On Monday 11-19-18, Sheriff-elect Rogers met with the Guilford County Board of Commissioners in a closed-door session regarding the plans for the old Guilford County Jail.

"I believe it's best that the citizens get what they're wanting," stated Rogers, adding that the sitting administration had proposed spending more than $17,000,000 "in renovating for a law enforcement center. I believe that after looking at and studying the project plans, [as well as] the monies going into this project that Sheriff Barnes approved, repurposing the old jail to house law enforcement offices is unfeasible."

Rogers added that it would be best to "demolish the old jail and build a new, state-of-the-art law enforcement center from the ground up," which would "better serve the community and law enforcement personnel."

The Sheriff-elect also proposed that the funds be utilized to build a parking deck at the current site of the old jail to house the vehicles of the employees of the Sheriff's office as well as other county employees.

"All of this can all be done for less than the current project proposals," stated Rogers. "We're working on budgeting and timeline with the commissioners, with the support of Commissioners Alston, Philips, Perdue, and others [who] are looking out for the best interests of Guilford County citizens and will be looking into the best and most cost-effective way of getting this done."

Regarding Transition

"My team has been in contact with the outgoing administration in regards to the transition," noted Sheriff-elect Rogers. "I have not yet personally spoken with [Sheriff Barnes], and Mr. Barnes has not reached out to me, which is a big surprise. My staff has, however, been in contact with his staff and we are actively pursuing a smooth transition. I hope to have an open, direct line of communication with the current Sheriff."

11-19-2018: Message to the Immigrant Community

Committee to Elect Danny Rogers for Sheriff | PO Box 7012 | Greensboro, NC 27417

For Immediate Release

I want the Latino community, as well as any immigrant community—any community—to understand that I'm working for everyone in Guilford County. I want to offer a vision of diversity here, where everyone is served and protected.

I will continue the same policy as the previous administration. Once an inmate is scheduled to be released they will not be held under ICE I-247 detainers unless ICE has and can produce (1) a copy of an outstanding criminal (not civil) warrant or (2) a valid court order directing the inmates detention. I stand by my pledge to make a positive change for all citizens of Guilford County.

11-10-2018: Response to News & Record Article Published 11-10-2018

Committee to Elect Danny Rogers for Sheriff | PO Box 7012 | Greensboro, NC 27417

For Immediate Release

In response to your recent article just posted online titled “Historic: Guilford picks first black sheriff, ousts sheriff who had long enjoyed bipartisan support.” I have been bombarded with calls and well-wishes from law enforcement officials across Guilford County and the state of North Carolina indicating their eagerness to develop a working relationship with me.  Also, I have had a whirlwind of interviews since my historic victory as the first African-American elected as Sheriff of Guilford County. I have interviewed with various media outlets on television, in person, and over the telephone. I will grant the News and Record an interview and would’ve gladly done so for this article. Regarding my opponent’s spokesman stating I told the Sheriff’s Office no one would lose their job; my response is this. My opponent chose not to retain all his predecessors’ staff and I’m sure after due diligence with my team I won’t retain all of his.

“A Positive Change for All Citizens of Guilford County”

This is an official announcement that Danny H. Rogers will file to run for Sheriff of Guilford County in February 2018. Danny continues to believe that major changes are needed in the Sheriff’s Office for better community safety, citizen protection, and confidence in law enforcement. These changes include:

Driving a proactive, transparent, accountable, and properly accredited Sheriff’s Office as a foundation to better serve and protect all of the residents of Guilford County.

Implementing effective community policing will be a strategic priority to better engage the residents resulting in more safety, less crime, and better outcomes.

Building trust, communication, and community interaction opportunities amongst residents and law enforcement will foster lasting relationships that support the overall health of the communities.

Reducing inmate recidivism with a renewed focus to generate a long-lasting impact on the former inmates as they become productive citizens while also providing for more safety and tax dollar savings for the entire community.

Launching new initiatives within the Sheriff’s Office focused on developing and retaining officers to improve morale and reduce the cost of attrition.

Emphasizing more effective hiring practices and promotional opportunities within the Sheriff’s Office resulting in a more inclusive, diverse, and productive team at all levels.

DANNY ROGERS’ PLATFORM

  • RESTORE agency accountability and accreditation

  • CREATE safer outcomes with community policing

  • REBUILD law enforcement and citizen relationships

  • SAVE tax dollars through recidivism reduction

  • REDUCE officer attrition rates

  • DEVELOP equitable employment practices

DANNY ROGERS’ BACKGROUND

Danny Rogers, as a native of Guilford County, was born in High Point and has lived in the community for over 50 years. He attended and graduated from Southwest Guilford High School. Danny has worked as both a sworn and non-sworn law enforcement officer in Guilford County. He has served with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office as a Detention Officer and as a Deputy Sheriff in roles that include vice and undercover operations. He has worked as a Police Officer with High Point Police Department. In the private sector, Danny is currently a small business owner of two successful companies. He built a contract janitorial services/landscaping business from the ground up along with being the proud proprietor of a successful restaurant/food truck business.

Danny was raised by a single mother in the High Point, North Carolina. At the age of 10, his first job was working a paper route. He spent many hours at the local Carl Chavis YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club. He benefited from having mentors such as Fred Wright Sr., his Boy Scout Leader, and Hank Wall, founder of Brothers Organized to Serve Others (BOTSO). Both were major influences in his life and helped him understand the concept, “It takes a village to raise a child.”

Danny’s law enforcement background, personal experiences, and educational background afford him a unique perspective. He has earned the perspective to see the criminal justice system through the lens of both the law enforcement officer working diligently to keep our community safe and the average resident striving to be a productive member of the community while preserving their reputation and integrity. These experiences have helped Danny to develop both a respect for law enforcement and a passion for helping others with the realization that our mistakes should refine us, not define us.

Danny earned his Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Leadership and Executive Management from Walden University in 2017, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from ECPI University in 2013, and an Associate Degree in Theology from Team Works Bible College in 2008

Danny Rogers is married to Dr. Ruthie Rogers and the couple has six children. He is a member of Love and Faith Christian Fellowship. Danny currently resides in Jamestown.

DANNY ROGERS’ COMMITMENT TO GUILFORD COUNTY

There continue to be many law enforcement challenges for the residents of Guilford County to include the constant battle to reduce crime, to provide safe streets and neighborhoods, the battle against illegal drugs entering our communities, the impacts of drug addiction, mental health issues and consequence, and the impacts of higher inmate recidivism rates.

As the Sheriff of Guilford County, I will work every day, in every community, to serve and protect all residents from the challenges, known and unknown, and to create stronger, healthier, and safer neighborhoods.
